Pontiac Going Rear Wheel Drive?

By Paul Crowe

Pontiac

When you read the story of the Hot Rod Solstice project, you notice that GM Performance jumped right in to help with the details. It’s almost like they were looking to boost Pontiac’s image in the eyes of the hot rod community. Now, Autoweek is reporting that Pontiac is planning to go all rear wheel drive in the near future. No trucks, no front wheel drive, just power from the backside like performance cars used to have and for the most part, still do.

The plan will take a few years and some FWD cars will still show up in dealer showrooms but the move is in the rear drive direction. A real GTO to replace the short lived model recently introduced and based on the new Camaro platform, a new Grand Prix and maybe even a new Firebird.

Will it happen? Time will tell but GM is obviously pulling out all the stops to regain market share and momentum and returning to the American muscle car era that carried it so far for so long is a pretty good idea. Let’s hope.

I really hope it goes this way. Every car I have owned has been a pontiac and I’d love to see a complete RWD lineup. I would also love to see the T/A come back with the new camero. The concept is wicked based on the ’77 body style! If it get’s produced, that will be one of my next 2 cars to go with the V8 solstice I want!

    Lets do this GM!
