Afraid of commitment? Porsche has just the thing. A new pilot program in Atlanta will offer 50 drivers the chance to subscribe to the Porsche auto lineup instead of buying a car, for $2,000 per month they’ll have their choice of a 718 Boxster, Cayman S, Macan S or Cayenne on demand, swapping between models whenever the mood strikes. For $3,000 per month, the choices expand to 22 models.
Registration, insurance and maintenance costs are covered, though subscribers still have to pick up the tab for fuel. They can swap for as many different models as desired during the month.
The program is called Porsche Passport and is one more attempt by automakers to adapt to the changing expectations and desires of younger drivers who are used to an on-demand, ride sharing marketplace where car ownership is, shall we say, evolving.
The program will be in partnership with Clutch Technologies, a startup offering analytics software that predicts what drivers will want based on a variety of data such as weather and past behavior. Clutch Atlanta is their main location, but they also have a number of other locations in the USA with a variety of other models and brands to choose from.
It isn’t clear whether the Porsche subscription plan will operate exactly the same as the Clutch program, but it’s probably very similar. It’s a very interesting alternative for the driver who wants to keep his options open, very interesting, indeed.
